Newsletter – April 2020
Did April drag or fly for you? Personally, I think it has flown past! The fantastic weather has certainly helped and now we have the May bank holiday to look forward too. There isn’t an article out there which doesn’t mention the benefits of exercise and connecting, so make sure you do lots of both this weekend and throughout this whole pandemic. Anything that is good for the soul works for everyone!
In the news…
Fantastic efforts on social media has brought people together to raise well needed funds for our frontline staff. Another campaign, “Do it for Dan” has seen some of Ireland’s biggest sports stars campaign for much needed funds to pay for a surgery for young Laois boy Dan Donoher. Over €2 million has been raised with county football stars Colm Cooper and Owen Mulligan auctioning off football boots that raised €35,000 & €11,000 respectively.
Last month, road traffic fell by over 75%, levels last seen in the 1960’s which has been quiet refreshing when out on walks/runs (with our 2km naturally). There is no doubt that these lockdowns are hitting the fossil fuel industry. With fewer drivers on the roads and planes in the air, the price of oil has slumped to an 18-year low at $19 per barrel.
Another positive (you’ve gotta take the positives when you can!) is the reduction of pollution. There have been great stories of wildlife reproduction and reduction of smog in densely populated cities. A great example is in Venice where “A combination of low tide and low traffic has led to an increased transparency of the water in the canals of Venice." The Leaving Certificate exams will start on July 29th, Minister for Education Joe McHugh has confirmed. The government are also looking at abolishing Leaving Cert exam fees & rebating families with transport fees during to financial pressures during this period, which is helpful, but I don’t envy anyone doing their exams!
As we all know the coronavirus has arrived in most countries across the global and in some ways it’s like being part of a live human experiment watching the different approaches of various countries, their leadership and how their nations react. I, for one, am pretty happy with our leadership, their approach and to date our nations reaction, but how long will it last? Is there complacency? Are we all getting tired of being cooped up? How quickly has our world turned? Our timeline show’s you just how…
Reports that a 2-week extension will be added to the current lockdown for the ‘vast majority’.
In Sport…
The German government have given the green light for their domestic football league “Bundesliga” to restart on May 9th. All games will be played behind closed doors with Chancellor Angela Merkel believing it will be a boost in morale for the football mad country. I’ll definitely be tuning in for my sporting fix.
Other football leagues around Europe have decided to abandon their seasons, will the English Premier League follow suit? I’m sure all the Liverpool fans out there are getting nervous.
For us GAA fans, the restrictions of no more than 5,000 people at one event will wreak havoc on the championship fixtures for 2020. Let’s hope we see all our counties in action at some point of the season – safety first though!
Competition…
Last month we asked “What are you missing most about your old ‘normal life’?”
The results resoundingly show that 72% of people are really missing friends/family with the remaining 28% missing a nice pint during COVID-19 and I don’t think anybody can blame you for that!
