August 2019 newsletter

Aug 01, 2019

Hi all

Summer has come and gone and when the schools start back, we know it’s officially over. Unless of course you are heading to EP for one last blow out. With a yellow rainfall warning issued by Met Eireann be sure to bring your rain jackets!

In the news…

In the news this month an unprecedented number of fires have raged throughout Brazil in 2019, intensifying in August. There have been more than 80,000 fires so far this year, the most ever recorded by the country’s National Institute for Space Research (INPE). It’s a nearly 80 percent jump compared to the number of fires the country experienced over the same time period in 2018. More than half of those fires are taking place in the Amazon.

The 2019 Rose of Tralee winner Limerick Rose Sinead Flanagan. The 27-year-old junior doctor succeeds Waterford Rose Kirsten Mate Maher. Ms Flanagan grew up in Mungret and now lives in Adare, Co Limerick. She also revelaed that she attened the Crescent College, the same school as Greg O’Shea, the winner of TV show Love Island. There must be somehting in the water there! The hurling might not have gone Limerick’s way this year but they seem to been doing just fine in other competitons! We couldn’t produce our July newsletter without mentioning a trip that Gary and myself from PeopleSource did around Ireland at the start of the month. On Thursday the 1st of August we set off from Dublin on a 5-day trip around the North – West coast of Ireland. We arrived in Belfast the

Thursday evening and did the Black taxi tour around the city. It’s a political and mural tour around the main Catholic and Protestant areas of the city. I highly recommend it. https://www.belfasttours.com/

On Friday morning we set off for Gweedor in Donegal but stopped along our way to see another city rich in history Derry. Again, a city I would highly recommend. It is a city that has seen its tough times through the troubles also.

We arrived in the Gaeltacht area of Gweedor later that evening and the scenery you witness is something to catch your breath. We ended up in a local GAA club that Friday night for the local nightclub. The less spoken about that the better.

Day 3 we decided to head onto Westport in Mayo and luckily Mayo had defeated Donegal that day in the football qualifiers which made it a great night out. I had been to Westport before and had cycled the greenway & climbed Croagh Patrick so we decided to just celebrate the Mayo victory with the locals.

Finally, we hit Galway for the last day of the weeklong race meeting. After meeting up with a few friends we hit a few pubs in Eyre Square and enjoyed a great night out. The journey back to Dublin next day was tough but we’re already planning on doing the second half of Ireland down South next year.

In Sport…

In GAA Tipperary cut loose in the second half to crush 14-man Kilkenny and win their third All-Ireland title of the decade. Brian Cody's men had the better of a scrappy opening period, leading by five points after 21 minutes, but a goal from Niall O’Meara kickstarted Tipp’s revival and just before half-time former Hurler of the Year Richie Hogan was dismissed for a high challenge on Tipperary’s corner-back Cathal Barrett. Tipperary led by a point at the interval, 1-09 to 0-11 but, like their old rivals have so often done to them, they came storming out in the second half to close it out comfortably. Liam Sheedy, nine years after stopping Kilkenny's 'drive for five', has led Tipperary back to the Liam MacCarthy Cup in a style he could scarcely have imagined.

We couldn’t not mention the big GAA football final this weekend when Kerry arrive into town to try and spoil Dublin’s ‘drive for five’ party. This promises to be a fascinating final. Best of luck to both teams.

Finally, in gold, Rory McIlroy won the Tour Championship and FedEx Cup title for the second time in four years to pocket the $15million first prize in Atlanta. McIlroy carded a closing 66 at East Lake to finish 18 under par, four shots ahead of American Xander Schauffele.

On another note…

After tasting Heineken 0.0 first alcohol-free beer it’s got me thinking of what other non-alcoholic beers are out there. I found the below article on the top non-alcoholic beers for 2019. It’s worth a read as I think we will all find ourselves in a situation of been the designated driver at some point!
