December 2019 Newsletter

Two more sleeps to the big day!  The Christmas parties have been and gone – hopefully without a hitch! Presents should have been purchased at this stage – although there are a few here in the office with shopping still to be done!  We would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Thank you for all your support throughout the year.

The end of the decade is imminent and interestingly, today on Radio 1, Joe Duffy had a vote on the high & low points of the decade. The lowest points being the banking crisis, water charges and the scandals surrounding the Catholic church. The high points being Katie Taylor’s Olympic & World Championship titles, repealing the 8th Amendment and the passing of the marriage referendum.

In the news…

The month has flown by!  The Christmas season kicked off with this years’ Late Late Toy show, the theme was ‘Frozen’ but the real theme was diversity and inclusion, which really seems to have hit the right note for both children and parents this year.

Interestingly, according to a new study by the United Nations, Ireland was listed as the country with the third highest quality of life in the world! (behind Norway and Switzerland).  Thannual Human Development Index rankings are calculated using three categories: health, education and income. Ireland has a life expectancy of 82 years ranking 16th. In terms of expected years of schooling, Ireland is ranked 7th and on income Ireland ranked 12th on the list with a gross national income of €55,265.

December 2019 saw two big developments in politics - Boris Johnson won the UK election in somewhat of a landslide victory. President Trump has the unflattering accolade of being only the third President in US history to face impeachment.

In Sport…

The big announcement was Jim Gavin stepping down as Dublin senior football manager after seven years in charge. In seven seasons under Gavin, Dublin have won six All-Ireland titles, five National league titles and seven Leinster titles. Of the 21 major trophies that Gavin's Dublin contested during his reign, they won 18 of them. He departs having just managed Dublin to a historic five in a row in the All-Ireland senior football championship. Dessie Farrell is the incoming manager after winning all Irelands with Dublin U-21s over the past number of years. Will the Dublin train keep rolling or will this give other counties a glimmer of hope?

Irish rugby provinces have been performing above expectations in the Heineken Champions Cup with Ulster and Leinster already qualifying with two games remaining while Munster and Ulster are well in contention to qualify in the upcoming weeks.

In Entertainment…

I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here ended.  EastEnders star Jaqueline Jossa was named Queen of the Jungle 2019. While Dancing with the Stars UK was won by late entrant Kelvin Fletcher.

PeopleSource events…

PeopleSource and invited guests attended the Chartered Accountants Ireland Christmas lunch at the Burlington Clayton hotel in Ballsbridge. As usual, it was very well attended with fantastic entertainment from Oliver Callan.

We continued our support to both the ‘Shoebox Appeal’ and FoodCloud – both very deserving causes which we are only to happy to be affiliated with.

In 2020 we are delighted to announce we will be sponsoring the ACA Annual Dinner – this year it will be held in the Dublin Convention Centre on Friday 31st January.  Loughlin Quinn will be the Guest of Honour. https://www.charteredaccountants.ie/Annual-Dinner

Earlier this year PeopleSource had almost 1,500 responses to their ‘Tipping Points 2019’ survey. Here are some of the findings in numbers https://www.peoplesource.ie/article/findings-in-numbers---tipping-point-survey-2019. Take a look at the full report below or feel free to contact PeopleSource.ie to find out how to use the findings to help deliver your successful talent strategy for 2020. https://lnkd.in/g_sjCW4
