PeopleSource - Accounting & Finance Recruitment

Newsletter – January 2020

Happy New(ish) Year, we hope you have settled back into your routine after the festive period. January 2020 is ending, and I think we can all agree it has been one hell of a loooooooong month. Did you complete ‘Dry January’ or fall off the wagon?  Are you going to keep going with Veganuary into Vegurary (yep, we totally make up that word)?  Are you still going to the gym?  How ever you’ve ended the month, the good news is, Spring is on its way!  Next stop Valentine’s Day!

Our big news this month is our sponsorship of the ACA Annual Dinner this Friday night (31st) in the Dublin Convention Centre.  A room of over 850 accountants! If you are attending, please do pop by our table to say hello!  - https://www.charteredaccountants.ie/Annual-Dinner

In the News…

January has brought plenty of talking points. Record-breaking temperatures and months of severe drought have fuelled massive bushfires across Australia. New South Wales was worst affected.  The Prime minister got a hard time for heading to Hawaii on his hols but seemed to see sense eventually.

Our own Taoiseach Leo Varadkar announced a general election for Saturday, February 8th. This is the first Saturday general election since 1918.  The idea is to increase voter turnout and avoid the need to close schools.  Fianna Fail seems to be topping most polls, but we all know how wrong the polls have been in recent times, think Brexit & President Trump!  Do you believe you have enough information to cast our vote with a full understanding of candidate & party manifestos?

From politics to Princes!  Someone somewhere has just added two new candidates to their recruitment portfolio.  Prince Harry & Meghan Markle are breaking with all tradition by ‘going it alone’!  I have no doubt they will have no problem securing their dream jobs soon, although it might be though to meet their expectations.

In Sport…

January brings about new seasons for both Rugby & GAA. The Six Nations is back this weekend with Ireland facing the Scottish.  Andy Farrell takes the management hot seat and has named a rejuvinated Irish side with Doris and Kelleher set to make their debuts. Here’s to great Six Nations!

The GAA league season also brings fresh faces, tactics and new rules for all competing counties. Dublin and Kerry footballers served up a feisty affair in Croke Park last week ending in a draw while 2019 Hurling champions Tipperary lost out to 2018 champions Limerick in a game that saw Limerick fight back from 10 points down. Also, a notable mention to Ballyhale Shamrocks & Corofin on their recent All Ireland Club Championship wins.

Lastly, a thought for  Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna and seven others who perished in a helicopter crash on Sunday. Bryant won five NBA titles with the LA Lakers, one of the most famous sports teams in America.

In Entertainment…

A smorgasbord of Reality TV is available this month from Dancing with the Star to Dancing on Ice to Love Island! Love Island's first ever winter series has been somewhat of a disappointment with 800,000 fewer viewers than the summer version. Viewers feel it is overkill from the matchmaking show. A show we highly recommend watching on Saturday nights is ‘The Tommy Tiernan Show’. Tommy interviews guests without knowing the identity of his guests – great fun and eye opening!

City Break recommendation…

Gary at PeopleSource recently ventured to Krakow for a 4-day break. The Polish city is steeped in history, from the amazing architecture built on the Vistula river to the famous Jewish quarter where there are great bars & restaurants - Krakow is a fab option that won’t break the bank. Flights & accommodation (3 nights) are cheap and shouldn’t cost you more than about €200.  A lot of people also visit the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camps. An experience that will stay with you forever.

Competition…
Last month we asked, “Over the past 12 months, have you taken your full entitlement of annual leave?”

A resounding 75% of the vote were ‘No’.  All work and no play is no fun at all.  Do take you full entitlement, you’ve worked for it and deserve it!  Congratulations to Ciara Gately who is our winner of the monthly €100 One4All voucher – We’ll be in touch!

Question this month is

“Who do you think will win the General Election on February 8th?”

Enter here to be in with a chance to win this month’s prize this month’s prize of a €100 One4all voucher.
